Garren's Life Long Love of Travel
A true rule-bender must see the world through the eyes of others. As a legendary hair stylist, Garren has traveled all over the world for fashion shows and magazine shoots - and it is one of his great loves. “The thing about traveling,” says Garren. “Is that it opens your eyes. When you’re working in a new environment, you start to take on and learn the ways of the place you’re in. It changes the way you see the world.”
For Garren, traveling has been some of the best times of his life - whether Italy, Paris or London to places more off the beaten track. It has changed the way he does hair. Though fashion magazines during the 70’s and 80’s often picked up the tab for extravagant travel, Garren often didn’t have his usual equipment, people or environment. “This forced me to be inventive. It exposed me to different styles and habits.” These styles and habits gave him ideas and new ways to approach hair.
What are Garren’s favorite places in the world? Italy is his favorite. He loves Paris for its fashion and London for its vibe and relevance. But some of the most memorable trips have been to places he would never have expected to find himself in.
In the 70’s, Vogue sent Garren to Jaipur - India’s famed “Pink City.” He stayed in the legendary City Palace in Jaipur where he was hosted by the Maharajah of Jaipur (his nickname: “Bubbles”). “It was like Fantasia,” says Garren of the dreamy quality of the Indian desert city. “It’s a memory that will stay with me forever.”
Another unforgettable trip was to Morocco where he visited Yves Saint Laurent’s Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech. The property - renovated by Saint Laurent’s foundation - is now a museum and one of the most famous gardens in Africa. There, Garren got to see Saint Laurent from a different angle - and that deepened his perspective on his fashion. He also recalls Doris Duke’s estate in Hawaii - Shangri La - as special, exquisite and bizarre.
Who knows where Garren will end up next? Maybe an island. Maybe the desert. Either way, he believes: “It’s always important to get out of your comfort zone.”
Spoken with true rogue spirit.
